History from prehistoric to the present, including displays of traditional Oléron activities—the Museum of the Ile d’Oléron is an excellent introduction to the island.

The permanent exhibition of the Museum of the Île d’Oléron follows human progress on the island from Neolithic times (with displays of handcrafted jewellery made from seashells) to the present day. The visitor will be able to follow a time line through various rooms, each devoted to specific island topics: salt production, wine growing, gathering of pine resin, fishing, traditional island costumes, and housing.
Oral histories from older Oléronnais citizens, together with interactive displays and films, enliven the tour. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum regularly mounts special exhibitions. Guided tours, educational workshops, educational tours, children’s birthday parties and other events—all are available, to visitors of all ages.
The museum is classified as a Musée de France et Tourisme et Handicap (Museum with facilities for the disabled).
